Frequently Asked Questions

What are the goals of the Engineering Institute?
The purpose of the Institute is to allow students to explore career opportunities in aerospace, biomedical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as statistics, mathematics, and computer applications.

What is the program like?
The program is multi-faceted: students attend classes, take off-campus field trips, design and build robots, write technocratic oaths and poems, have a camp-wide water fight, and generally cultivate a positive learning environment. Participants have the opportunity to meet other bright, motivated high school students, graduate students in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, UVM Professors, and professional engineers in the community. Living on campus, students have a set of behavioral guidelines for the week.

Who is eligible to attend?
The program is targeted to high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior year. Each year we also accept a few students who are finishing their freshman or senior year, if we feel that they are a good match for the program. The program enrollment is limited, so early application is highly recommended for guaranteeing participation in the program.

We accept students based on the following criteria:
  • year (priority is given to sophomores and juniors)
  • area of interest
The program focuses on aerospace, biomedical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics and computer science. Students interested in architerctural engineering, for example, or chemical engineering, may not benefit from this experience.
  • academic transcript: grades and courses taken
Where and When?
The Institute takes place on campus at the University of Vermont. Students live in the residence halls for the week and classes are held in the academic buildings. The program lasts for eight days, Saturday to Saturday, and usually takes place during the last week of June or first week of July.

How much does the program cost?
In State: $650
Out-of-State: $990
Some financial aid is available (see financial aid for details).

How do I apply?
In-State: Vermont students MUST apply through the Governer's Institute of Vermont (not UVM). Applications and materials are available in all VT high schools early in February. The school deadline is usually March 15, but should be confirmed individually. Contact: Jean Olson, Executive Director of the Governer's Institutes of Vermont, at (802) 229-4757 or giv@sover.net.

Out-of-State: Contact Dawn Densmore at UVM, (802) 656-8748 or densmore@cems.uvm.edu.

How do I keep in touch with my child?
See communication.

Are there emergency medical staff at the camp?
Yes! One of the program co-directors, Beth Tailer, is a nurse and lives in the residence hall with the students.

In the event that a student becomes sick or hurt, he or she should notify a staff member and we will immediately seek appropriate medical treatment, notify the parents, and complete the appropriate forms.
