Expectations and Goals
The Engineering Institute is a pre-college enrichment program designed
to introduce a student to the college experience in an educational
institution. The UVM experience will be exciting and rewarding.
Students are expected to participate in all scheduled programs and
activities. This includes all classes, group meetings, and trips.
Students are treated as responsible young adults and are expected to
help in fostering an atmosphere of respect and trust in their
relationships with fellow students, teachers, counselors, members of
the University community and members of the local community. Being
friendly, cooperative, and polite are qualities that promise to make
you an excited, effective member of this group as well as a future
professional team.
Registration and Tuition
Registration is held from 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. When students
register, we will collect the remainder of tuition due . Out-of-State
checks can be made out to "UVM Engineering Institute." In-State students
should make checks payable to "GIV" (these can also be collected during
registration).
Registering Cars on Campus
If you plan to drive to the Institute, we can make arrangements for a
campus parking permit for the week. Please bring a check for $12 for the permit. At registration, we will collect your
keys and give you a parking permit, which you should place on your
rearview mirror. We will return your vehicle keys at check-out on
Sunday.
Dorm Keys
At registration, we will issue you a dorm key and a swipe card. If a key is lost or stolen, you should notify your
counselor immediately. There is a $45 fee for lost keys. We will collect the dorm keys before the closing ceremony.
Dorm Rooms
Engineering Institute is a residential program: all students live on
campus. (Each room is a double, and roommates
are assigned before the beginning of the program.) There are separate
halls for male and female students, and students are not permitted on
the opposite-gender floors. (There are several common area lounges for
socialization.) Students are responsible for the general upkeep of
their dorm rooms and the common areas.
We provide for each student:
- a linen pack (sheets)
- a blanket and pillow
- bath and face towels
- one fan per dorm room
Out of common sense, we recommend that rooms not be left unlocked, and that students leave valuables at home. The University is not liable for personal property.
Counselors
Each student is assigned to a counselor. (The counselor:student ratio
is approximately 1:10.) Counselors live on the halls with the students,
and their role is to provide support for the students and to help the
program run smoothly. The counselors are graduate students from the
College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciencies, and they can be excellent role
models and mentors.
Transportation at the Institute
Students will walk each day from the dorm to the academic buildings and
the dining hall (about 10 minutes to each). Buses will transport
students to off-campus events.
Schedule
The Institute schedule is very intense and often flexible. Students
meet with their counselors every evening to go over the following day's
schedule. It is very important for students to be on time to classes
and to be aware of field trip, bus departure times and so forth. We
treat the participants as adults and expect them to act responsibly,
with the support and guidance of the counselors.
Meals
Meals will be provided by the University. We are accustomed to
accomodating vegetarian students, but if you have other dietary needs
or restrictions, please describe them on your Parental Authorization
Form or notify Dawn Densmore.
Free Time
For the purpose of sanity and socialization, there is some free time
built into the schedule. We have a recrational lounge with a pool
table, a foosball table, and a ping-pong table, as well as a piano. We will spend one afternoon at the beach.
Daily Photographs
Counselors will be taking pictures
throughout the week. Check on the website for daily photographs! (You
can visit the 2007 photographs page now to see this year's Institute!)
Recycling
UVM recycles. Please recycle cans, bottles, paper and other items. Dorm
rooms have appropriate bins for trash and recycling, so please dispose
of items properly! Recyling is the law in Burlington.
Confidentiality
Information regarding a student's special needs, physical, medical or
educational requirements which could impact the student's well-being or
that of others during their stay, must be communicated to the College
prior to arrival on campus. Such information will be treated in a
confidential and professional manner, and should be included with or
attached to the Parental Authorization Form.
