Summary of the Program
The UVM/GIV Engineering Institute enrolls approximately 100 high school students, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors
In addition to typical camp fare, each student brings to the Institute
tools for engineering and sand arch projects, and a water mister. During
the week, students and staff help to relieve heat on campus with a water
derby.
Students gain insight from special guest speakers and presentations like the perrenial favorite by IBM Engineer John Cohn, "Electrical Magic - frying pickles with electrical current".

Engineering Projects Teams of students will work on one of four projects
during the Institute: Renewable Energy Systems, robotics, aeronautical engineering, and Engineering Sustainability.
Each student will submit an essay delineating the reason why they chose the project and how research in this area
will impact our world. Recognition will be given for Sustainability, Benefit to Humanity, Cost Benefit Analysis,
and Communications.

Poetry and Technocratic Oaths Students are challenged to write about
their experience at camp on their roles as engineers. Each student writes a Technocratic Oath, encompassing the
vision that he or she has for the future: "I, __, with my knowledge of science, math and technology, will...".
In addition, students are encouraged to write poetry - humorous or serious - based on their camp experience.
As incentive, the program staff offers prizes for the best Oaths and Poems. Previous winners are posted in the
archives.
